Public relations became a profession in 1903 as Ivy Lee undertook to advise John D. Rockefeller on how to conduct his public relations. He advised John D. Rockafeller to tell the truth and to provide facts about events that were occurring within his companies to avoid a negative perspective. "Edward Bernays created the concept that there are many publics and each public needs to be appealed to. He advised public relations professionals to seek out group leaders and other key communicators (opinion leaders), who would be able to pass along ideas to other members of the public." He said that public relations is a public service, it should promote new ideas and progress and public relations should build a public conscience. Edward Bernays may truly be called the father of public relations and Ivy Lee the first public relations counselor.

I found the information above interesting because Public Relations has been a major contributor to the way we relate things as a public. Lee for instance encouraged Rockafeller to invite the press and let them see the truth versus hiding the facts which most companies try to do when a disaster strikes. Lee believed that honesty will bring you to the top if you let it. It creates a trust among the people. Bernays created the foundation to what PR is founded on; public service, promote new ideas and building a public conscience. If a company can manage these things they are destined for success granted other things contribute to a successful business but having the public's support is a major contributor. Bernays idea of responsibility to the public led to him refusing unethical clients and I find that admirable to turn down money and services for the greater good of the public. However, now not many companies will turn down clients as long as they will get paid and they won't become liable for them they are will to provide PR for that person/company.
TOW 1:
This summer I changed my major from a pre-Nursing major to a Public Relations major. I was not getting into Nursing school in Fort Myers and was tired of wasting my scholarship doing so. It has been a culture shock for me, I have not adapted my new path right now. When I first began this course I thought that I would work for a non-profit organization, but I didn't know what I would do for the non-profit. Now as I am understanding PR I would really like to work for a food magazine/channel maintaining and increasing the publics image about the company. I enjoy planning events as well as consumer relations. I believe that the publics opinion is the most important and I find it fascinating at how the publics opinion can make a company better compared to its competitors.
